Polish Students visit Sherborne and the Gryphon School, 16 – 19 November 2017

Three Polish secondary school students and a teacher visited Leweston School and Sherborne, in an exchange visit from when Sherborne Students went to the Chojna days weekend..

Short Mat Bowls Group in Sherborne 12 – 17 November 2017

A group of 7 short Mat bowls players came to Sherborne to play local groups in Leigh, Yetminster, Thornford and Sherborne West End. The visit was a great success as reported in this Danish Short Matt Bowls Visit Success They met with some local Danes in Sherborne and also discussed with local bowls and  Petanque players the opportunities to have an exchange visit.

PEACE Project, Agros, Cyprus 21 – 28 October 2017

Sarah Whittick Lead 9 participants to take part in this event that fulfilled its objectives across a broad front and was a lot of fun.

XIX World Festival of Youth 2017 in Sochi, Russia 14-22 October 2017

Lizzie Dores was lucky enough to be selected to represent the United Kingdom and the Douzelage at
the World festival of Youth and students in Russia; this year’s biggest youth event, consisting
of 20,000 participants from 185 countries.
Kelly McBride (Edinburgh), and Lizzie were also selected to attend the opening Parade in Moscow,
with about 100 other youth delegates from around the world. Her report is Russia Report 2017 (1)

David Lough fundraising talk – 8 Oct 2017 

No more Champagne: Churchill and his money. Happily, David Lough speaks as well as he writes. Te evening was very enjoyable, hearing about those parts of the lives of the famous that we don’t generally hear about.

General Meeting 11 – 14 May 2017

The 2017 general Meeting of Douzelage took place in Bad Koetzting, Bavaria. The theme was about Refugees in Europe. The press release is HERE

Bundoran Walking visit 3 – 7 May 2017

A group of 10 from Sherborne went to Bundoran for 3 days of walks and visits to historic places, including Yeat’s Grave and memorial, Donegal town and Rossnowlagh Friary. The weather was glorious sunshine throughout, as it always is in Ireland, and we had plenty of time to explore the town and coast.

We were treated to some excellent meals in a variety of homes and restaurants, followed by a few pints of Guinness in Brennans bar and Irish music in the various other bars of Bundoran. Many thanks to all our Bundoran friends for their hospitality and we look forward to their next visit to Sherborne.

Granville Carnaval 23 – 27 February 2017

Marcus, Kevin and six students from The Gryphon Year 12 took part in Granville Carnaval, plus associated visits and fun activites. It was tough wearing the costume, but all of our students were fantastic ambassadors for Sherborne and their school. Write ups are linked here along with photos of the main event.

Chojna Fund Raising Film 23 November 2016

The Polish film this year was “The Cruise” Winner of the Samowar DFK Award 1972. Produced by Marek Plwowski and starring Stanislaw Tym. The film had an absurd plot becoming a hilarious parody of the communist system.

International Youth Meeting Sherborne 14- 17 November 2016

The Douzelage Youth committee delegates held its Autumn meeting in Sherborne

Meerssen 25th Anniversary celebrations 6 – 11 October 2016

A group of delegates from Sherborne took part in the celebrations of 25 years of Douzelage in The Netherlands.

Five members of Sherborne Douzelage plus Josh Whittick attended a Symposium organised by Meerssen Douzelage to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Douzelage which was held in Maastricht, Netherlands on 8th October. The theme was The Future of the EU and there were distinguished academics and politicians who made presentations throughout the day. A total of about 70 people from the local community attended the well organised and interesting event.

Chojna Days of Integration – 25-28 August

Sherborne was represented at this celebration of the town’s reconciliation between the German and Polish people. It particularly involved representatives from their German partner towns and Sherborne. There were church services, dedications and celebrations. Douzelage 25th Anniversary – 18 – 21 Aug 2016

A festival of Music and Dance was held in Sherborne with 5 local folk dance groups and musicians plus some 40 dancers and musicians from Latvia, Czech Republic, Ireland and visitors from The Netherlands. A press release covers a summary of this here: 25 years Press release 2016

Douzelage Young Musician – 6-11 July 2016

Five Teenage musicians and two leaders represented Sherborne in the Douzelage Young Musician (M4EU) in Zvolen, Slovakia. The visit was a wonderful experience for all participants and the young musicians had a wealth of musical and cultural opportunities and insights. A report of this will be issued and posted here.

Chojna Days – 1-5 June 2016

A group of people from Sherborne will visit Chojna as part of their town festival. This included a youth delegation who talked about ‘Life in Sherborne’ to primary school classes.

General meeting in Tryavna, Bulgaria – 12 – 15 May 2016

The annual gathering of all Douzelage towns took place in Tryavna where there will be a conference and parallel workshops with splits between business, education and youth representatives. Due to the nature of the activities in the area there was a significant focus on sharing of information and examples from each country on their traditional crafts and folklore. Youth representatives from Sherborne took local crafts, including Dorset Buttons and Corn dollies to display.

The Croatian town of Rovinj was approved as the town to represent their country.

Chojna Hotel students

Six hotel management students and a leader arrived in Sherborne on 24 April for a four week stay. They worked in The Eastbury, The Grange, The Crown hotels and The Bakehouse B&B. This is part of their work experience from Poland; another six are working in hotels in Marsaskala, Malta as part of the same scheme.

Irish blue Stack Ramblers exchange – April 2016

Six of the Blue Stack Ramblers came to Sherborne on 20th April 2016 for three days of walking and sightseeing. Less challenging walks than in Ireland, but they brought the wet with them for one of the days.

Youth’s Role in Local Politics for a better Democracy – Marsaskala, Malta 2016

This project addressed the perceptions and beliefs of people regarding what role young people have and should have in local and national politics. It included conducting on line research, collating questionnaires from all age groups in participating countries, then discussing and debating these in Marsaskala, Malta from 17 – 21 March 2016. Seven people from Sherborne joined others from Hungary, Latvia, Poland and Malta in the workshops in Malta. Read more about it here.

Granville Carnaval 2016

February. Three Gryphon students took part on a Carnaval Float in Granville and a host of other activities, including shadowing French Students for a day in the Lycee. This was the girls in costume:DSCF4097

Bundoran Festival and Walking Trips 2015

Wessex Morris Visited Bundoran with some others from Sherborne Douzelage to take part in their local folk festival from 1 – 4 October 2015. This is part of the growing folk music interchange between Sherborne and Bundoran coordinated through the Irish North West Regional College.

Walking exchanges have started with the Blue Stack Walkers from Bundoran and a local walking group in Sherborne. The visit to Bundoran in March 2015 had some spectacularly attractive routes.

Together towards a better Europe – Agros Cyprus 2015

From  20 -27 June 20 2015 six young people and two leaders from Sherborne went on a cultural exchange project organised though the Youth Dynamics Group in Cyprus. “Awesome!”  is the phrase that has been taken away from this project. The aim of the trip was to demonstrate the culture of our country to five other European countries which included Romania, Greece, Italy, France, and the hosts, Cyprus. Read more about it here.

Road to Romania – Bus Project

In 2014/ 15 Sherborne Douzelage and Bad Kötzting Douzelage, with the help of some other towns, raised funds and purchased a 9 seater minibus for the Psychiatric Hospital and youth Groups in the town of Siret, Romania. The bus was bought in Germany and driven from there to Siret to coincide with the 2015 general Meeting in the town. Read more about it here.
